Overall rating: 4.4 / 5

Google Flights is the most powerful free flight search tool available — built on Google's data infrastructure to provide price tracking, flexible date search, and destination exploration that helps travelers find the cheapest flights without spending hours on multiple booking sites.

The Flexible Date Calendar

Google Flights' price calendar displays the cheapest available fare for every day in a selected month, visualized as a color-coded grid — green for low prices, yellow for moderate, orange for high. This visualization answers the question "when is the cheapest time to fly?" in seconds, enabling date flexibility as a price optimization strategy.

The "Flexible Dates" option extends this to show cheapest fares for ±3 days around selected travel dates — finding that flying one day earlier saves $150 without requiring separate searches for each date combination.

Price Tracking and Alerts

Google Flights price tracking monitors specific routes for price changes — notifying via email when the monitored price drops below a threshold or when prices change significantly. Users can track a specific date or a flexible window, receiving alerts that enable booking when prices are favorable rather than committing at the moment of search.

This tracking is particularly valuable for routes booked weeks or months in advance: monitoring a summer vacation route for 2 months and booking when a sale occurs rather than booking at initial search prices.

Destination Exploration: Fly Anywhere

The "Explore" view (setting destination to "Everywhere" and browsing a world map) shows the cheapest destinations reachable from a given origin in a selected date range — enabling budget-based travel planning where destination is secondary to price discovery. A traveler with $400 to spend and flexibility about where to go discovers they can reach Europe, Southeast Asia, or Latin America within budget.

Price Guarantee and Booking

Google Flights doesn't book flights directly — it redirects to airline or OTA (Online Travel Agency) booking pages. The Price Guarantee feature (available in the US for eligible searches) refunds the difference if the price drops after booking through Google.

Google Flights vs. Kayak vs. Skyscanner

Google Flights has the cleanest interface and best flexible date tools. Kayak adds Price Forecast (predicting whether prices will rise or fall). Skyscanner finds budget carriers not indexed by Google. Most sophisticated travelers check all three — Google for interface and flexible date search, others for specialized carriers and additional sourcing.
